Gazas Hamas PM to visit Egypt
Gaza's Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyya will arrive in Cairo on Wednesday for a meeting with Egyptian officials.
The large Palestinian delegation is to include many ministers, officials and leaders from Hamas, as well as businessmen and representatives of different political groups inside the Gaza Strip.
On Thursday, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi held talks with both Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas's chief Khaled Meshal.
They discussed issues including Palestinian reconciliation and supplying Gaza with much-needed petroleum.
"President Morsi affirmed Egypt's support for Palestinians in Gaza, which confirms a new era in relations between Egypt and the Palestinian cause," said Meshal on Thursday.
Following his victory in the presidential election, Morsi vowed to restore Egypt's role in aiding the reconciliation between the Palestinian factions.
Egypt’s intelligence services brokered a reconciliation pact in May 2011 that was supposed to end a four-year rift that had divided the Palestinian territories. But the agreement has not been implemented, with both sides unwilling to concede power. Hamas has ruled Gaza for five years after winning in elections there and later expelling forces loyal to Abbas.
