Barack Obama called a two-day break in his campaign to see his grandmother, who has become seriously ill
The presidential candidate's staff said the health of Madelyn Payne Dunham, 85, who helped bring the US senator up, had deteriorated "to the point where her situation is very serious". He has cancelled diary commitments in Wisconsin and Iowa planned for tomorrow. His wife Michelle will take his place at two rallies in Ohio on Friday. Spokesman Robert Gibbs said: "Senator Obama's grandmother Madelyn Dunham has been one of the most important people in his life, along with his mother and his grandfather.
"Recently she became ill and her situation is now very serious. Senator Obama has decided to change his schedule on Thursday and Friday so that he can see her and spend some time with her." The daughter of an oil company clerk, she is the "white grandmother" Obama referred to in a speech on race as he called for a "more perfect union" in the US. Obama , who last visited her in Hawaii in August, said in a campaign advert Dunham "taught me values" including "self-reliance, working hard and treating your neighbour as you'd like to be treated". Democrat Obama leads his Republican rival John McCain in national polls and has been building on his momentum with just 13 days to go before the election.
