UK Foreign Office Minister responsible for Middle East Affairs, Ivan
Lewis, is set to visit Syria on Monday to hold meetings with key
officials and tackle political and economic issues, the Syrian Al-Watan
daily reported on Tuesday.
Lewis is to resume discussions with state officials following the Friday meeting in London between Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moallem and his British counterpart David Miliband, in which they tackled bilateral ties and developments in the Middle East. The British envoy is also expected to meet with Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah Al-Dardari to discuss bilateral economic relations, the daily said, quoting an official source. London is keen to boost political and economic relations with Damascus, the source added. Former British Foreign Minister responsible for Middle East Affairs Bill Rammell, who visited Damascus last April, said after meeting with Al-Moallem that the UK sought to develop ties with Syria especially after it adopted positive steps towards Lebanon and Iraq.
