Egypt's Transportation Minister Mohamed Mansour
Egyptian Transportation Minister Mohamed Mansour referred 34 officials from the Egyptian Railways Authority to an investigative committee looking into the tragic collision of two passenger trains on Saturday.

Independent MP Moustafa Bakry asked the Cabinet to step down in an interview with BBC Arabic news channel on Monday.

Egypt train crash Egypt has charged three railway workers with involuntary manslaughter after two trains collided south of Cairo, killing 18 people.

The office of the general prosecutor says the two conductors and a third man who was supposed to be monitoring the tracks but allegedly abandoned his post were also charged with damaging public interest Monday.

Egypt universities students protests for AqsaThe universities of Cairo, Alexandria, Mansoura and Minya witnessed student demonstrations on Monday against the recent storming of Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli security forces.
Campus security guards clashed with students, some of whom set fire to Israeli flags.


The demonstrations overshadowed concurrent student union elections, which saw relatively low turnouts as a result.

A parliamentary transportation committee meeting held in the presence of Minister of Transportation Muhammad Mansour witnessed a heated debate over Saturday's train crash in Cairo's Ayyat district.

At the meeting, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Moufid Shehab admitted that the government bore "political responsibility" for the disaster. "Criminal responsibility, however, lies with those who didn't follow the rules," he said.

Head of the ruling National Democratic Party's influential Policies Secretariat Gamal Mubarak admitted on Sunday to the existence of nepotism within the government.

"It is part of Egyptian culture," he said in an "open chat" broadcast live on the Internet. "But we'll fight the phenomenon with more stringent conditions for public office."
