Hosts and last year’s runners-up Al Sadd of Qatar managed a thrilling 37-37 draw against Al Zamalek from Egypt in a fortune fluctuating Group A match of the IHF Super Globe at Al Gharafa Stadium Indoor Hall yesterday

Al Sadd were seconds away from the losing the match but Renato Sulic saved the day for the local club by scoring the crucial equaliser with a few seconds to go for the final hooter.

Meanwhile, holders Ciudad Real of Spain and THW Kiel of Germany both kept themselves in the hunt for a place in the final of the IHF Super Globe.

The two clubs registered contrasting wins in the Qatar Handball Association-organised tournament.

There was little to separate the two teams in the Al Sadd-Zamalek match and the final score proved just that.

The teams fought every inch to gain superiority in the first half and maintained the trend in the second half.

Zamalek started off the proceedings by taking the lead and managed to hold on to it for most part of the first half. But, Al Sadd rallied back to tie the score at 9-9 and thereafter it was a seesaw tussle.

The Egyptian club rallied to take the lead and went into the half time break, with a two goal advantage 17-15 in their kitty.

The change of ends did not change the situation. Zamalek held a one-goal advantage for most part of the second half.

The hosts, however came back to draw level at 26-26, thereafter the lead changed hands many times between the two teams until Sulic scored the equaliser.

Al Sadd now has three points from two matches while Zamalek have just one point from two matches.

World’s top club eight teams from five continents are competing in the five-day tournament and have been divided into two groups.

There will be no semi-finals but the two top-ranked teams of the preliminaries will directly meet in the final on May 18 in the $750,000 prize money tournament.

“We have a good chance 24 hours to refresh ourselves, physically improve to face a strong team (Ciudad Real), not a dream team, we can win against them,” said Ahmed Deabes coach of Al Sadd.

Earlier, Southern Stars of Australia were taught a lesson or two by holders Ciudad Real of Spain in the Group B match.

Coach Talant Dujshebaev side which has won the Super Globe twice gave a flawless display to register their second successive win.

The Spanish club were runaway winners at 45-17 and proved in no uncertain terms why they have been rated as the world’s best team.

Ciudad Real’s will now face Qatar’s Al Sadd in a crucial match today. The two teams clashed in last year’s final which the local club lost.

Earlier, in the first match yesterday Germany’s THW Kiel defeated Esporte Clube de Pinheiros 36-29.
