“Egypt is a historical country with ample cultural and scientific capacity, and mutual ties between the two countries will influence regional developments, particularly in the Muslim world,” said Deputy Chairman of Iran's Majlis (parliament) Committee on Foreign Policy and National Security Hossein Ebrahimi, quoted by Fars News Agency on Sunday.

Transition of power to the Egyptian people and the eventual enhancing of Iran-Egypt ties "will pose a challenge to the future of Israel and the American dominance in the region and will put an end to Western colonization in the Middle East," he added.

The senior Iranian lawmaker stressed that the recent wave of Islamic awakening in the Middle East and North Africa will revive “the grandeur of early Islamic period.”

Ebrahimi referred to the invasion of Bahrain by Saudi-led forces in efforts to quash peaceful anti-government protesters and insisted that Riyadh could never have committed such a move without backing by the West.

The top Iranian parliamentarian also cautioned Saudi Arabia against the consequences of such 'aggressive' policies against the “defenseless people of Bahraini.”

On March 13, Saudi-led forces were dispatched to the Persian Gulf island at Manama's request to quell countrywide protests.

According to local sources, dozens of Bahraini people have been killed and hundreds arrested so far during the violent government clampdown on the peaceful demonstrations.

In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has swept the Arab world.

In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

In February, another revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of authoritarian rule.

Other revolutions have erupted in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while more anti-government upheavals have swept Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Algeria.

Meanwhile, more Arab countries are expected to witness similar revolts.
