Egypt welcomed here Friday the approval of a draft resolution by the current session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York for making the Middle East region free of nuclear weapons

A spokesman of Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hossam Zaki said that this resolution which is submitted annually by Egypt to the UNGA since 1974 calls on all Mideast countries to support the implementation of a proposal on making the Middle East a region devoid of nuclear weapons.

Zaki added that the resolution provides for subjecting all nuclear activities to the safeguards system of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), besides abiding all regional countries by not developing, producing or testing nuclear weapons or allowing the deployment of such weapons on their soil.

Zaki made clear that the UNGA accredited the draft resolution without voting like what happened last year.

He also hailed the approval of the draft resolution that Egypt annually submits to the UNGA in the name of the Arab group regarding the risks of the nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, saying that Egypt managed to muster the mobilization of 155 countries in the face of an opposition to the resolution from Israel and the U.S.

Further, Zaki made clear that the resolution reasserts the importance of Israel's joining of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) along with subjecting all its nuclear installations to the IAEA comprehensive safeguards system as an important act within the confidence-building measures and a step toward boosting regional peace and stability.

Zaki added that the approval of these two resolutions support the efforts of Egypt, the Arab group and members of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) toward establishing a region free of nuclear weapons and other mass destruction weapons in the Middle East.

He concluded by saying that this step comes in parallel with Egypt's other efforts on the same topic and at their forefront are the NPT revision session, the disarmament conference and the meetings of the IAEA general assembly and board of governors.
