Leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) opposition movement have reiterated their refusal to amend group bylaws to allow women to become members of its authoritative Guidance Bureau.
The move comes despite earlier requests by some MB members to establish bureau seats for women and young people so as to allow them to participate in the decision-making process. "We will suspend all those members who have requested such nonsense," Guidance Bureau member Muhammad el-Khatib said. "Not all jobs are appropriate for women." "This strategy was adopted for their own protection. We don't want our women to be harassed by the security services," said MB political advisor Abdel Hamid el-Ghazali. "As for young people, they already enjoy more than adequate representation within the brotherhood's rank and file." "Bureau work requires expertise in dealing with multifarious political forces and challenges," el-Ghazali added.
