Students at Minya University in Upper Egypt staged a demonstration yesterday to condemn Israeli violations of Al-Aqsa Mosque and other Israeli actions against Palestinians including arrests and land grabs

University President Gaber Mohamed and other members of the faculty joined approximately 1500 students for the protest.

Tensions flared in Jerusalem after local Palestinians accused a group of Jewish extremists of entering the Al-Aqsa compound on 27 September. Worldwide protests began two weeks ago after an Israeli raid on the sacred area arrested between 12 and 15 Palestinians.

The demonstrators called on the United States and the European Union to take steps to halt Israeli actions that aim to make Jerusalem part of Israel, including the construction of new settlements.

The international community should bear its responsibility for putting in place the articles and recommendations of Goldstone report, the protestors said. The United Nations report accuses Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during its offensive on Gaza in January.

The university issued a statement warning of the "dangers of the continued Palestinian split, which Israel uses as pretext to commit its crimes and abort peace efforts."
