Egypt's renowned scholar, thinker, astronomer and prolific writer Moustafa Mahmoud died yesterday at a Cairo hospital after a long battle with illness

He was 88. After a turbulent half-century of thorough scientific research to unveil the secrets of the religions, the universe and life

Mahmoud was laid to rest in a simple tomb at his native home town of Shebien el-Kom, Menoufia in the Nile Delta. His funeral united grief-stricken Egyptians, who enjoyed reading his books and watching his weekly TV programme, “Science and Faith" which has been aired by dozens of local and Arabic stations.

Mahmoud made his final journey through Shebien el-Kom's streets to his resting place next to the graves of his grandfather and father, who had the greatest impact on his life and ideas.

In his writings, Mahmoud has contributed to understanding the real moderate nature of Islam among the ordinary people in the Middle East.

Hundreds of Egyptians stood outside a Cairo mosque to catch a last glimpse of the thinker after Mahmoud's bereaved son carried the coffin out of his private charity organisation.

"God is great, God is good," the crowds chanted, as the mourners and his son, Adham, were unable to hide their tearful grief, while praying. "We've lost a father and teacher. We've lost a reasonable voice," said a mourner.

Mahmoud, a lifetime devotee to religious and scientific research, was trained as a doctor, but later chose a career as a journalist and author, travelling widely and writing on many subjects.

In his autobiography, "My Journey from Doubt to Faith", Mahmoud wrote that studying medicine had enabled him to reveal his religious sense, which led to his enlightenment, awareness and remembrance of God.

Mahmoud wrote more than 100 controversial books and novels that were widely read by Egyptians and Arabs because he always focused on the theme that work is a kind of worship.
