Egyptian security forces said on Tuesday that they seized a Palestinian man from Gaza attempting to enter Israel through their territory, in the first such incident in memory.

A security source said border guards arrested the man when he was spotted on the border about 1,000 meters south of the Kerem Shalom crossing point, where Israel’s, Gaza’s, and Egypt’s borders meet.

The source said that he told security officers that he was a Fatah member who fled Gaza after Hamas’ June 2007 takeover of the territory. He planned to travel to the Israeli city of Beersheba and then on to the West Bank, the source added.

Palestinian security sources confirmed the story, saying that he paid smugglers 2,000 US dollars to help him cross the border into Israel.
