In early 2008, the University of Cairo became the sixth partner institution of the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), with the first edition of the FIFA/CIES Sports Management programme beginning in October that same year. Founded in 1908, the University currently boasts 12 faculties and institutes and over 260,000 students. The second edition of the prestigious Sports Management programme is set to get underway on 6 December 2009.

On 16 October, course students had the opportunity to meet the President of world football's governing body at the official opening of a new national technical centre, the EFA's second Goal project. These up-and-coming sports managers were therefore able to thank Mr Blatter in person for FIFA's initiatives within the field of academic education, particularly his role in improving management in Africa's sporting organisations via the 'Win in Africa with Africa' initiative.

"Hosting the FIFA/CIES programme is a great opportunity for Egypt. It gives us the chance to change our perception of sports management and makes us want to learn more about it," said Taha Mohamed Diaey, one of the students present.

"At our meeting with the FIFA President, he showed us how much interest the international federation has in the education of sports managers. That interest is underlined by the fact that three students from the programme were involved in the organisation of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt."

The President himself praised the partnership agreement between CIES and the University of Cairo, whose inscription process for the second edition of the FIFA/CIES programme ends on 19 November 2009. "It's such a pleasure to see a new generation of young managers, men and women who are aware of their responsibilities, playing an active role at every level of sport!"
