The North African nations could be totally tied come the end of qualification, which would leave FIFA with a rather delicate situation

Algeria and Egypt face the very real possibility of being inseparable in African World Cup qualification Group C, meaning that the drawing of lots could decide their fate.

The Fennecs currently sit atop the table. They have picked up 13 points from five matches and have a three-point lead on rivals Egypt.

However, the Pharaohs still have a chance of making it to the 2010 World Cup. All they need to do is beat the Algerians by more than two goals in the final qualifier on November 14.

Algeria currently have a goal difference of 9-2, while Egypt's goal difference is 7-4, meaning that a two-goal victory for the latter would level the sides.

For the World Cup qualifying stages, the method used for separating teams who are level on points is the same for all Confederations, as decided by FIFA. If teams are even on points at the end of group play, the tied teams will be ranked by:

1. goal difference in all group matches
2. greater number of goals scored in all group matches
3. greater number of points obtained in matches between the tied teams
4. goal difference in matches between the tied teams
5. greater number of goals scored in matches between the tied teams
6. drawing of lots, or a play-off (if approved by FIFA)

A win by two goals for the Egyptians would mean that the sixth differentiating rule will apply. FIFA could, therefore, allow a play-off to take place.
