bust of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti An iconic bust of Egypt's Queen Nefertiti has been moved to its new home in Berlin.
The fragile sculpture was transferred to Germany's newly-renovated Neues Museum "with extreme care" on Sunday (04.10.09).

It will go on display later this month in a dedicated display room.

German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt uncovered the 3,000-year-old bust on the banks of Egypt's Nile River in 1912. One year later, he took it back to Berlin where it was first displayed in 1923.

The Egyptian authorities have since claimed the 20-inch sculpture was illegally removed from the country and demanded its return.

German officials have refused to send the antiquity back to Cairo, insisting it was rightfully owned by Borchardt.

The Neues Museum was almost destroyed by bombing during World War Two. It will open on October 17 after a decade-long 200 million restoration project.
