Croatia wants to draw its way to the world to present the colourful culture of a nation of 4.5 million people.
What better way than for its ministry of culture to bring to Malaysia, an exhibition on Contemporary Croation Drawing.
The Croation Embassy's Minister Counsellor Tatjana Carev-Maruna puts it best.
"The exhibition will emphasise a vital factor of today's art scene, namely the cultural diversity and pluralism to which Croatia is fully committed.
"It is precisely this diversity that opens up possibilities for inter-cultural dialogue, and the visual arts with their universal language of tolerance and mutual respect make cultural co-operation and programme exchange possible," she told Bernama.
According to Maruna, the 'Touring Contemporary Croatian Drawing' exhibition began its extensive tour in 2005, and was shown in over 20 countries, including Jordan, Egypt, China, Hong Kong, a number of European countries, South America and South Africa.
"The interest shown by various countries in hosting this exhibition in their cities was enormous and it confirmed that such projects directly contribute to bringing cultures of European and non-European countries closer," she noted.
Maruna said that in Malaysia, the exhibition would be held at the National Art Gallery from Oct 9 until Oct 31, and would also be shown at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery from Nov 11 to Dec 13.
The event would be launched by Deputy Minister of Information Communication and Culture Senator Heng Seai Kie on Oct 9.
Croatian Ambassador to Malaysia Zeljko Bosnjak will deliver a speech while National Art Gallery Director-General Dr Mohamed Najib Ahmad Dawa will give a welcome address.
Maruna said, the embassy felt that this cultural event would confirm many Malaysians desire to get to know the Croatian visual art scene better and also open new space for co-operation and exchange of cultural projects between Croatia and Malaysia.
The exhibition comprises 140 works of 70 contemporary Croatian artists, including 15 women.
It represents the finest works of different generations of artists, including the young and up-and-coming, and various trends in modern visual artworks of the 20th and 21st century. Each author is represented by two works, added Maruna.
The drawings are based on six themes, namely metamorphosis of the body, figures in space, suggestion of depth, challenge of colour, traces of gesture and structures, she said.
Preparing this project, the Embassy of the Republic of Crotia was led by the fact that an exhibition of contemporary Croation drawing is of special importance, precisely due to the need to perceive Croatia's own art in the broader international context, as well as to evaluate our own achievements within that environment, she said.
She said that during the exhibition, Croatian films would be screened to boost the country's cultural tourism.
Meanwhile, in his message in conjunction with the exhibition, Dr Mohamed Najib said that the 'Contemporary Croation Drawing' was an art presentation "which is most varied and invigorating in narrating the artistic genius of multi-generational Croation artists."
"The various messages in the artworks echo the concerns of this era, endlessly locating a balance between the material and the spiritual," he said.
