Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit receives the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND) Chairmen, former Australian Foreign Minister, Gareth Evans and former Japanese Foreign Minister, Yoriko Kawaguchi

According to a Spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the ICNND is holding its regional meeting on the Middle East in Cairo.

The Spokesman mentioned that Aboul Gheit, during the meeting, requested the necessity for the Commission report, expected to be issued this year, to include the Arab legal requests to establish a nuclear weapons free-zone in the Middle East.

The Minister affirmed the importance of asking Israel to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), just like the rest of the region’s states.

The Spokesman outlined that Aboul Gheit asserted the necessity for the report to tackle the disarmament commitments of the five nuclear states, and the importance for such states to take particular tangible steps along with a time frame goals to get rid of the huge arsenal and the numerous usage dangers whether deliberately or by mistake.

At the same time, Aboul Gheit asserted preserving the rights of states joining the NPT in developing various national programmes for peaceful nuclear usage.

Aboul Gheit underlined the main elements of the Egyptian stance regarding the international disarmament agenda, affirming Egypt’s refusal to any requests of additional commitments for Arab non-nuclear states until Israel joins the NPT, said the Spokesman.

The Minister criticized the eclecticism in dealing with proliferation cases and criteria dualism in handling it, particularly when it comes to Israeli nuclear capabilities.

Aboul Gheit asserted the universal correlation between non-proliferation steps and disarmament measures for nuclear states, as to maintain the NPT three basic elements.

The Spokesman added that the Foreign Minister, during the meeting, illustrated Egypt’s initiatives in disarmament and non-proliferation whether within the framework of 2010 NPT Review Conference, United Nations (UN) or the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where Egypt presents an annual resolution on the implementation of safeguards at the Middle East.
