ISPs vie for U-20 football cupLocal internet service providers (ISPs), including TE Data and Link.net, are currently competing to carry the under-20 world football cup now underway in Egypt

"We have posted this year's Ramadan television serials live on our site," said TE Data Managing Director Ahmed Osama. "Now we want to post the football matches live."

Local telecommunications expert Walid el-Shami expects future mergers between major Egyptian ISPs due to the high demand for such services. "Egyptian public television is converting some material into digital format so as to be able to upload it onto the net," he explained.

"Internet companies wanted to carry the 2006 World Cup online, but DSL service was not widespread in Egypt at the time," added el-Shami. "Now, by contrast, there are some 875,000 DSL users in Egypt."

According to recent statistics, TE Data enjoys 60 percent of the local DSL market and Link.net 30 percent. The remaining ten percent is shared between a number of smaller ISPs.
