Egyptian Ambassador to the United States, Sameh Shoukry, said that
Gamal Mubarak's recent visit to the U.S. was in his partisan capacity
to meet with the new members of Congress and the new decision-makers,
denying that it was to prepare for President Mubarak's visit. He explained at a press conference on the sidelines of a meeting with the door-knocking delegation that Omar Suleiman regularly visits the United States so as to promote cooperation between the two countries, pointing out that all the stories about President Mubarak's visit are not true. He said that presidential visits are determined by the two presidents, and that next visit would be announced once they have both agreed on it. He said the U.S. administration did not put any pressure on Egypt to release Ayman Nour. "The State Department spokesman asked me what he should tell the media about this. I told him he can say whatever he wants. So he just welcomed Nour's Release," said the ambassador. He added that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for a return to dialogue between Cairo and Washington after it was cut off during the Bush presidency, pointing out that the U.S. is re-structuring its information on Egypt and the Middle East. "There are discussions between the two sides that will not be disclosed to the media so as not to affect our common interests," he said.
