Egyptian navy is carrying out a search operation from Marasa Matrough, 500 km north west of Cairo in the Mediterranean sea, for a boat carrying at least 50 illegal migrants that is heading for Europe
The operation began after Egypt’s Center for Research and Marine Rescue authorities received an SOS signal from the boat carrying the illegal migrants off Marsa Matrouh.
 
Egypt navy searches for missing migrants

Almost immediately, the Navy sent a boat with foodstuff and specialized teams to provide aid and rescue for the boat.
On 1 September 2008, the Egyptian navy rescued a boat carrying 81 illegal migrants about 160 nautical miles north of Marsa Matrough.
