Chew Chan ends jinx Print E-mail
Sunday, 24 August 2008
Olympic taekwondo debutant Che Chew Chan may have failed to land a medal but at least she managed to end Malaysia’s embarrassing record of never winning a first-round match yesterdayChew Chan ends jinx

Chew Chan got off to a winning start when she beat Uzbekistan’s Evegeniya Karimova 5-4 in the women’s above 67kg category at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium yesterday morning.
However, the 25-year-old fell in the quarter-finals later, going down to Norway’s Nina Solheim 1-3.
Solheim went on to make the final, giving the Malaysian a shot at the bronze. But the Malaysian was a spent force in the first round of the repechage and was outclassed 1-5 by Egypt’s Noha Abdul Rabo.
Although she won a match, Chew Chan, the Asian Championships silver medallist, was clearly not satisfied with her performance against Solheim.
Punishing contest: Malaysia’s Che Chew Chan (right) defending a kick from Norway’s Nina Solheim in their 67kg taekwondo quarter-final bout Saturday.
“I was aiming for her head but missed. I misjudged the distance. She fought well and adopted the right tactics,” said Chew Chan.
“I should have done better. I wanted to win a medal. After winning my opening match, I needed to win the next two matches to be assured of one but I failed. Then God gave me another chance (in the repechage) but I failed to take it either.”
Lee Wan Yuen was the first to represent Malaysia when taekwondo made it to the Olympics as a medal sport in Sydney in 2000 but she lost in the first round to eventual silver medallist Myriam Baverel of France. Elaine Teo also never got past the first round in Athens four years ago. In Beijing she went through a similar experience, losing to eventual runner-up Azize Tanrikulu of Turkey on Wednesday.
