Israel Egypt Gas Deal Draws Barbs Print E-mail
Sunday, 04 May 2008
Israel Egypt Gas DealBanned Egyptian opposition group Muslim Brotherhood has taken a swipe at a 20-year gas deal between the Israeli occupying regime and Egypt, terming it an ethical and economic scandal

Leading member of the Egyptian group, Mr. Mohammad al-Baltaji noted the "scandalous" agreement was sealed under the stifling Israeli conditions imposed on Palestinians and at a time when Egyptians bear the brunt of natural gas shortages on domestic markets.
Egypt and Israel have signed a $2.5 billion agreement on sales of Egyptian natural gas to Israel, underscoring the controversial ties between the two sides.
The agreement stipulates Egypt will supply 1.7 billion cubic meters, or 60 billion cubic feet, of natural gas a year via an undersea pipeline from the north Egyptian town of el-Arish to the southern Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon.
Al-Baltaji said the gas supplies to the "Zionist regime" are provided at prices much lower than the international markets.
He elaborated twenty percent of Israeli power plants operate by Egyptian natural gas supplies at prices 1/10th of the global markets, whereas 9 power stations in Egypt have stopped operation due to steeping fuel prices.
The contested agreement was not passed through the parliament and "the government turned its back on the Egyptian nation's will," al-Baltaji said.
The Muslim Brotherhood member also noted that the Israeli regime has turned down calls to freeze construction of illegal settlement on occupied West Bank and Al-Quds lands and continues violence against Palestinians.
He condemned the Egyptian measure which "fuels the Zionist atrocities against the Palestinian nation, which also runs afoul of Egypt's national interest."
