Egypt Pope Shenouda searched at Heathrow Airport Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 April 2008
Egypt + Pope Shenouda III, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of Saint Mark EpiscopateThe Egyptian Embassy in London has submitted an urgent request to the British Foreign Ministry on what happened to Pope Shenouda III, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of Saint Mark Episcopate, while he was departing from Heathrow Airport on March 30

Egyptian Ambassador to Britain Gehad Madi said security insisted on searching the Pope at the VIP lounge of Heathrow Airport, despite explaining to them that the Pope should not undergo such procedures.
He said the Pope had to pass through the electronic gate only.
Madi added that he has notified the Egyptian Foreign Ministry and sent an urgent memo to the British Foreign Ministry requesting an explanation so that this does not happen again.
The Egyptian Coptic Church said the Pope made no formal complaint about what happened and that the church is not a party in this matter, as it is a diplomatic issue left for diplomats to handle, describing the act as having been committed by an irresponsible person who did not appreciate the status of Pope Shenouda.
