A strong earthquake, measuring between 6.5 and 6.7 on the Richter scale, struck southern Greece around noontime on Thursday. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damageAccording to seismologists the epicenter of the earthquake was located about 140 miles southwest of the capital Athens, and about 12 miles offshore. The earthquake, which lasted for at least 15 seconds, was felt throughout the southern Peloponnese region and as far south as the island of Crete and Cairo, Egypt. Greeks were warned to stay away from buildings in areas near the epicenter.
