Egypt allows Palestinians to cross to Gaza Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 August 2007
Egypt's authorities are to send some 3,000 Palestinians, stranded in Rafah border terminal, into Gaza, following the Israeli green light
These Palestinians would be allowed back to the Gaza Strip on Thursday through al-Oja commercial border crossing which directly connects Egypt to Israel.
The officials have started registering the people in al-Arish Stadium for a seat on the convey taking them to Gaza.
A number of Palestinians were reportedly injured while rushing into the stadium to register for the transfer home.
The decision was made after Islamic Hamas movement threatened to blow up the crossing in order to bring the desperate Palestinians locked out of Gaza back home.
Around 12,000 Palestinians have been living in increasingly dire conditions in Egypt for about two months.
The Rafah crossing, the only crossing in and out of the Gaza Strip, in addition to all commercial crossings were closed by the Israeli army shortly after Hamas took control of the coastal region two months ago.
